Tech Tip: Benefits of Using Static IP Addresses

Description: Normally, when you hook up devices to your home router (wireless or wired), the router will automatically assign IP addresses to those devices by default (using a DHCP server) using a range that you specify. If you don't specify a range of numbers, the router will have a default range from which it will assign.

    A few examples of IP addresses:

  • Your Router - 192.168.1.1
  • John's Computer - 192.168.1.2
  • Jane's Computer - 192.168.1.3
  • Susie's iPad - 192.168.1.10

One thing to remember is that your network may have a slight variation on these addresses. In general, the first two numbers, 192 & 168, will be the same as you see here. Your third and fourth numbers may be different. Don't panic! This is just the way the manufacturer of your router decided to set it up.


Take a look above at the highlighted portion of the IP addresses. On your home network, the first three numbers will always be the same for every device, just as they are in the list of examples above. If you were to decide to change your network to 192.168.2, then all devices on the network must be changed to that format in order for the network to be able to communicate. This is an important point to remember whenever you decide to use static IP addresses.


So what is a static IP address? Simply put, it is a network address that you assign to the device - an address that never changes. When addresses are automatically assigned, they are put on a lease which usually lasts a few weeks. Every time your device connects, it is given the same IP address in that time period, but, after the lease is up, the address can change. A power Loss may also cause the router to assign new addresses to devices on the network.

 Why does it matter if the address changes? In most cases, it actually doesn't matter. You never notice the change. However, there are a few situations where it does matter.

  • Security Systems - You won't be able to monitor from a remote location if your DVR suddenly has a different address. IP Cameras may not be found by the software, or be available for remote browsing.
  • Media Server - Depending on the software, you may not be able to access the server until you update the address.
  • Network Attached Storage - There's a possibility you won't see the drive anymore until you update the address.
  • Print Server - You won't be able to print until the address has been updated on any PC or device trying to print to it.
It is important to note that the last three situations may have extra software running to compensate for the address change. For example, some Security Camera software may use the camera network name or MAC assignment to detect and identify compatible hardware on a network.
 

If you are convinced that a static IP address is right for your situation, your choices need to be configured in two places - the router and the device.

  1. Open up your router's configuration page and look for your LAN settings. Within these settings, you should see an IP address range for the DHCP server. The address range will look something like this:
    • 192.168.x.___ to 192.168.x.___
      Take note of these ranges. Remember, the only number we're concerned about is the last number. Don't panic if your third number is different from the example shown here.
      If we assign an address that is within the range you see on the router, there may be a conflict down the road. For example, if your range is 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.10, we cannot assign any IPs that have the same last number in this range, 2-10.
      *Our postal service is set up the same way... Every house is automatically given an address. If we decide to build a house and give it a random street address, it may conflict with an existing house somewhere nearby, and the mail would be a mess.*

  2. Open up your device's network settings (i.e. security DVR or IP Camera). Look for a network setting that mentions the IP address. By default, it is probably set for automatically receive IP or DHCP assigned.Look for the option that lets you use a static IP. Enter an address that is not in the range we saw on the router and apply the new settings. It is sometimes helpful to write this address on a sticky note and attach it to the device so we can easily remember it later.
  3. If you were accessing this device from outside the house, you will also need to update the port forwarding address in the router settings. Find your port forwarding settings and update the address to the one we just made. If you haven't set up the port forwarding at all, please refer to your device's instruction manual as to which port(s) it needs.

Troubleshooting Tenda W311U Wireless Adapter will not connect to network

Description: This tutorial will address common connectivity issues with the Tenda W311U wireless adapter.
  1. On the keyboard, hold the Windows Key and type the letter R.
  2. This will display the Run dialog box. In the box, type msconfig and hit enter.

  3. Click the Services tab along the top, then scroll to the bottom and look for any running services labeled Tenda or W311U (Note: This differs depending on model, software version, etc). It may also be labeled as Wireless Network Configuration and the manufacturer is Unknown
  4. Once the proper services are located, uncheck the box to the left to disable it. Once disabled, click Apply in the bottom right.
  5. Now, select the Startup tab along the top, and the repeat the same process as above.

  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Once the machine powers back up, open Component Services by holding the Windows Key and typing R, then type services.msc into the box and hit enter.

  8. Scroll to the bottom and look for the Windows Wireless Service (in XP, it will be named Wireless Zero Config and in Vista/7, it is called WLAN AutoConfig)

  9. Right-Click on the Windows Wireless Service and click Start. Now, use the Windows Wireless Utility to connect to the network.

How to change the IP address of a Tenda Router

Description: Changing the IP address is helpful when connecting to some modems so there is no conflict on the network.

The internet and most networks function by using addresses. Each computer or device has its own mailbox (address) where the delivery of information comes to. In order for this to work smoothly, devices cannot share the same address (TCP/IP). Most routers are set to a default address of 192.168.0.1 that works well in a home or small business setting. However sometimes modems provided by an internet service provider will be at this same address causing a conflict and stopping access to the network and internet. The best way to deal with this conflict is to change the address of the router. The following steps are for a TENDA router.
  1. Connect a computer to the Tenda router.
    • Plug in an Ethernet cable in one of the yellow ports.
    • Plug the other end of the same Ethernet cable into the computer.

  2. On the computer open Internet Explorer.
  3. In the address bar type at the top type - "192.168.0.1" (without the quotes) and press enter.
    • Typing /main.html is not needed it will be added automatically

  4. A pop up will occur asking for a user name and password.
    • Default User name is admin
    • Default Password is admin
  5. On the left column click on WLAN settings

    • When that opens up select Advanced Settings

    • Click on the IP Address row
    • Change the 0 (zero) to a 1 (one). This will move the address away from a modem or other router.
    • Click on Apply.

  6. A message will appear about the router.
    • Click OK at this message.

    • The router will reboot and finish applying the new IP address.

    • Once you see the router rebooting as above, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router and wait for 60 seconds.
  7. Plug in the Ethernet cable back into the router and the computer.
  8. Test your new IP address
    • Open Internet Explorer and in the address bar at the top, type in "192.168.1.1" (without the quotes) and press enter.
  9. You will have a pop up box asking for a user name and password.
    • Default username admin
    • Default password admin
  10. If you see the opening screen for the Tenda setup you have successfully changed the IP address.
    • If for any reason this does NOT come up, try to connect to the router with the default IP address 192.168.0.1 and repeat the steps above.

Basic Router Troubleshooting

After going through IP address troubleshooting or isolating a router as a cause for your computer being unable to get online, this guide will walk through basic troubleshooting steps for a router.
  1. Verify the hard wired connections to the router.
    • Unplug all network cables from the modem, computer, and router.
    • Unplug the power from the modem and the power from the router, then shut down the computer
    • Take one end of an Ethernet cable and plug it into the modem in the Internet port then plug the other end of that same cable into the WAN or LAN port on the router. This is usually an isolated port, separate from 4 numbered ports.
    •  Take a second Ethernet cable and plug one end into one of the four numbered ports on the router and plug the other end of that same cable into the computer.
    • Plug the power back into the modem, wait one full minute, then plug the power into the router, wait one more full minute then turn the computer back on.
  2. Run the setup disc for the router again
    • If the disc cannot connect to the router to change the settings after verifying the hard wired connections, then the router is likely defective.
    • Verify any connection settings and credentials with your Internet Service Provider when running the setup disc.
  3. Verify a second computer is able to get online (if possible).
    • If neither computer is able to get online then the router or modem is the cause of the problem.
  4. Go through IP address troubleshooting steps
    • If after going through IP address troubleshooting and basic router troubleshooting the result remains the same, contact your Internet Service Provider or your router manufacturer for additional assistance.

IP Address Troubleshooting - Verifying a correct IP address

Being unable to connect to the internet and getting a local only access on a computer can frequently be due to invalid IP addresses or the computer being unable to attain a Default Gateway. This guide will walk through checking the IP address the computer is getting and troubleshooting the different issues caused by different IP addresses.
  1. Click the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen and type CMD in the Search Programs and Files field and press Enter.

  2. In the command prompt window that appears, type IPCONFIG and press Enter.

  3. The two most important pieces of information displayed will be the IPv4 address and Default Gateway.

    • If the IPv4 Address is 0.0.0.0, contact your Internet Service Provider or check out our Router Troubleshooting article here.
    • If the IPv4 Address begins with 169.254.xxx.xxx, check out our 169.254 IP Address troubleshooting article.
    • If the IPv4 Address begins with 192.168.xxx.xxx, verify the default gateway.

Network troubleshooting 1 - Verifying a wired network connection in Windows 7

Connecting to the internet can be challenging when something goes wrong. This article is the first of a series of network troubleshooting articles. An important first step in network troubleshooting is verifying the level of connectivity one has to their network. Once the level of connectivity is determined additional troubleshooting steps can be determined.
  1. Click the network connection status icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

  2. This icon will show the name of the network you are connected to along with the connection status. Should this icon show you are not connected to any networks, verify the physical connections to your computer and contact your Internet Service Provider for additional assistance.

  3. If the network connection status shows as connected with Internet access and you are still unable to get online, try resetting your web browser. Instructions for how to do that can be located here.
