Tech Tip: How to fix Windows Updates for Windows 8

Description: This guide will walk you through the steps necessary to troubleshoot and resolve errors when Windows 8 is failing on installing an update from Windows Update.

First try this Microsoft Fix-It:

 If that doesn't solve the issue try the following:

1. Right click on the task bar and go to Task Manager. (Alternatively press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task Manager.)
   
   
   
   
2. Click on More Details at the bottom left and then click on the Services tab on the right.
   
   
   
   
   
   
3. Scroll down to wuauserv or Windows Update.
   
   
   
   
4. Right-click and go to Stop.
   
   
   
   
5. Now open up Computer by clicking Start and Computer.
   
   
   
   
6. Navigate to C:\Windows by double clicking on Local Disc C:\ and then Windows.
   
7. Scroll down until you see the folder SoftwareDistribution.
   
   
   
   
8. Rename the folder to something else: IE: SoftwareDistribution-OLD.
   
9. Now restart your computer and try Windows Update again.

How to create a system restore point in Windows 7

System Restore is a very handy feature of Windows that will allow you roll your computer back to a previous date without losing any personal document. One of the most common reasons for this is to restore your computer to a working state after a Windows update has corrupted, or maybe just a program you installed. Doing a system restore allows you to keep all of your documents, but will remove any programs that have been installed since the date you select to restore to.

1. Click start and in the search box type "system restore" and press enter.
   
   


2. This will open System Restore. Click "Next".
   
   


3. This step gives the dates to select from to restore the computer. If a date isn’t shown that you would like to restore to there is an option to "Show more restore points." The other thing that can be done here is “Scan for affected programs.” This will show the programs that will be uninstalled by doing a system restore. Once the date has been selected click "Next."
   
   


4. Click "Finish" once the restore date has been confirmed from the previous page.
   
   


5. Click "Yes" confirming you would like to continue with the System Restore, keeping in mind this can’t be undone and the computer will need to restart during this process.

Addressing the "Operating System is not up to date" notification in ESET NOD32 Antivirus/ESET Smart Security 5

ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security keep track of whether or not your operating system is up to date. What this means is that when Windows Updates are available, ESET will provide a notification. Keeping your Operating System up to date is as important to your security as keeping your antivirus program up to date. This document will show you what the message looks like and what to do when it appears.

1. Check the ESET icon in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. When this message appears it will remain green or blue, but become the letter "i".
2. Double click the icon to open the ESET Window. When the window appears, you will receive the Home screen and the "Operating system is not up to date" message.
   
   


3. Click the "here" link at the end of the paragraph describing the problem.
   
   


4. This screen may not look exactly the same, but will show the updates available for Windows. Click Run System Update to proceed.
   
   


5. Click Install Updates on the Windows Update screen.
   
   


6. Once that process is complete, the error message will disappear from the ESET window and the ESET icon will return to normal.
