Tech News: What's new in Microsoft Office 2013?

Office 2013, the next edition of Microsoft’s flagship productivity suite, is available for business customers but won’t go on sale to consumers until the first quarter of 2013.

We got a look at it and here’s what is new in Microsoft Office 2013.

  1. Office 2013 has undergone some drastic new changes featuring a clean new interface, and is more accessible that any previous version of Office.

  2. The first thing you will notice in Office 2013 is the new modern interface. It still has the ribbon on the top with all of the toolbars just like Office 2007 and Office 2010.

  3. In the top right corner you will notice that you can sign in using a Microsoft account allowing you to access your Office documents from any Windows computer, smart phone, or tablet.

  4. Another way Office is more accessible is the added feature of saving your documents to Microsoft's cloud storage SkyDrive, allowing you to easily share documents and access them from anywhere.

  5. Making a new document has been made even easier with the expanded templates in Office 2013.

  6. Saving and opening files has been streamlined as well. Your most used folders will show up when saving and opening documents and you can even pin specific folders to the list.

  7. Sharing your document for collaboration has been simplified. Office 2013 allows you to invite people to view your document, email your document, present your document using Office Presentation Service, or Publish the document as a blog post.

  8. These are just a few general new features across the Office 2013 suite. Each individual Office program also has their own new features.

Tech News: Samsung Galaxy Note II slated to arrive on T-Mobile on Oct. 24th?

The Galaxy Note II is no doubt a highly anticipated device. Its little brother, the Galaxy S III is the most popular Android device of all time. The original Galaxy Note, a 5.3 inch phone/tablet hybrid, or “phablet” as many call it, was a great addition to the Samsung lineup. We’ve only been able to watch with baited breath as our friends overseas have been able to get their hands on the Note II, but the wait may soon be over. TmoNews got their hand on an internal document stating that the Galaxy Note II will release on T-Mobile in the US on October 24th. This ties in nicely, as Samsung scheduled an event for the very same day, with hints directing this towards being a Galaxy Note II event. This would be the first time a major Samsung device has been released the same day of its announcement.

The Galaxy Note II is the first device to sport a 1.6 quad-core Exynos processor in the US. Up until now, LTE and quad core chips didn’t get along, but Samsung has seemingly found the sweet spot.
The 5.5 inch behemoth is also expected to hit AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and US Cellular, but if this leak is any indication, our waiting may soon be over.

Is the Galaxy Note II on your list? Or is a 5.5 inch screen too big? Let us know in the comments!

Tech News: iOS 6 releasing on September 19th

Amidst all the hoopla of the iPhone 5 announcement yesterday, Apple gave a release date to its newest mobile OS, iOS 6. Starting September 19th, most users will be able to upgrade to the next iteration of “the most advanced operating system ever”. All current iPhone models (including the iPhone 5) all the way down to the 3GS will be able to upgrade. Furthermore, the new iPad and the iPad 2, as well the fourth and (just announced) fifth generation iPod touch are eligible as well. A few of the new features include Facebook integration, a completely reworked Maps application, smarter Siri, and plenty more. Most of the new features to iOS can be found on Apple's Website, but with under a week to go, it won’t be long until you’re able to try the changes out for yourself.

Tech News: Google Play now offering Gift Cards

There have been rumors circulating that Google was in the process of creating gift cards to use in its Play Store. Today, Google made it official. The cards are “on their way” to retailers and come in $10, $25 and $50 amounts (so far). According to Google, they can be redeemed for apps, music, TV shows and books. Magazine subscriptions, app subscriptions and hardware/accessories though, will still need your credit card number. So far, RadioShack, Target and Gamestop are the stores on board, though, expect that number to grow as they become more widely available.

Tech News: The next iPhone and “iPad Mini” rumored to be announced September 12

With the rumors flying for over a year about the inevitable release of the next iPhone, it looks like we finally may have a date to put all those to rest. According to iMore, Apple is expected to schedule an event for Wednesday September 12th where they will debut the new iPhone and the (also much rumored) iPad Mini. Coming from “sources who have been accurate in the past”, the release date of the new iPhone is set for 9 days later, Friday September 21st, and could include the iPad Mini as well. Historically, Apple has debuted new iPhone models in early-mid October. So if this date proves to be correct, it would indicate another major shift in Apples business practice in the post-Steve Jobs era. Some of the rumored specifications of the next iPhone include a larger, 4-inch display, 4G LTE, a smaller, 16-pin dock connector/charger and a faster processor just to name a few. The final build of iOS 6 is also expected to make an appearance, as well as the next generation iPod Nano. With a little over a month to go, all that’s left to do is play the waiting game.

Mac OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” available now!

Yesterday at Apple's quarterly earnings results, Apple dropped the bomb that its new OS, “Mountain Lion” would be releasing today, July 25th. Priced at $19.99 ($10 less than its predecessor) and available through the Mac App Store, 10.8 brings features that continue to bridge the gap between mobile desktop operating systems. All the 200+ new features can be found on Apple's website, though unfortunately, those who found themselves unable to upgrade to Lion would be in the same boat here, as the download requires either Snow Leopard (10.6.8) or Lion (10.7). With Windows 8 releasing only three short months from now, the stakes are high for a battle royale in the digital world.

Which operating system are you more excited for: Mountain Lion or Windows 8? Let us know in the comments!

Microsoft announces Windows 8 release date

Yesterday, Microsoft officially unveiled the release date for its next operating system. Looks like Friday, October 26th is when you’ll finally be able to get your hands on the Windows 7 follow-up. Windows President Steven Sinofsky made the announcement yesterday during Microsoft's sales meeting. This date holds true for both new PCs and upgrades, though there’s still no mention if this includes Microsoft's tablet, Surface. Seemingly, we’ll have to wait a little longer for that...
