- Click on the Start button in the bottom left, then choose
Control Panel on the right.
- In the Control Panel, select Uninstall a Program or
Programs and Features.
- Click View Installed Updates
- Scroll down the list to find Windows Internet Explorer 9. Click to highlight it.
- Click Uninstall above the list of updates.
- Wait a moment as it is uninstalled.
- When prompted to restart the computer, choose Restart Later
- Click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of the screen, then on the list of programs select
Windows Update.
- In Windows Update, choose the Check for Updates option in the top left.
- Once the check is completed, click on the option in the middle that says
1 Important Update is Available
- Note: it may say that more than one update is available.
- Locate Internet Explorer 9 item on the list.
- Right-click on the Internet Explorer 9 update and choose
Hide Update
- Note: This step is optional, and is here to prevent Internet Explorer 9 from being automatically installed again. If you want to reinstall it, skip this step and restart your computer.
- Once finished, restart your computer to complete the process.

Troubleshooting Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7
When opening Internet Explorer there can be a multitude of errors that appear or prevent you from accessing certain web sites. There are many troubleshooting steps that will work for several of these errors and get you on to web browsing. The following guide will walk through three main troubleshooting steps for problems in Internet Explorer 9.
Open an InPrivate Browsing session
An InPrivate Browsing session in Internet Explorer is essentially the same web browser but does not keep track of browsing history, temporary internet files, form data, cookies, or any user data. Should an inprivate browsing session solve the problem, then you may try disabling cookies or clearing all personal settings when resetting Internet Explorer.
Disable Protected Mode
Reset Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer 9 by clicking Start, All Programs, and selecting
Internet Explorer
- Click the Tools icon in the upper right corner of the screen
- Click Internet Options
- Select the Advanced Tab
- Click the Reset button
- Click the Reset button
- Note the check for deleting personal settings
- Note the check for deleting personal settings
- When the reset is complete click Close
- A message will appear across the bottom prompting to restart Internet Explorer.
Close Internet Explorer.

- Click the Tools icon in the upper right corner of the screen
- Select the Safety option
- Click InPrivate Browsing to open a new session
- A new window will open as an InPrivate browsing window. This is indicated at the top beside the address bar. In this new window attempt to view websites by typing
www.microcenter.com in the address bar (circled in blue) and pressing Enter on the keyboard. If this works then
reset Internet Explorer 9 again, but check the box for
"Delete Personal Settings."
Disable Protected Mode
- Open Internet Explorer 9 by clicking Start, All Programs, and selecting
Internet Explorer.
- Click the Tools icon in the upper right corner of the screen
- Click Internet Options
- Click the Security Tab
- Select the Internet Zone
- Un-Check Enable Protected Mode
- Click OK on the ensuing dialogue box
- Close and restart Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 9 Adobe Flash YouTube Streaming Video
You attempt to open a web site with streaming video or other content rendered by Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer 9 64-bit. Instead of the video playing, You receive the message "You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video."
- What is Adobe Flash? According to Wikipedia it is "a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to web pages. Flash is frequently used for advertisements and games." (source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash) - Why do I need it? Many popular websites (e.g. YouTube) use Adobe Flash for streaming videos and other content.
- When you attempt to go to YouTube (www.youtube.com) or another website that has flash content you receive a message similar to:
- After installing the latest version of Adobe Flash player, you still receive the same message.
- This is common with any 64-bit version of Internet Explorer to include the version that comes with Windows 7. As of the writing of this article, there is not a released version of Adobe Flash Player that supports 64-bit browsers.
- Windows 7 comes with two versions of Windows Internet Explorer, a 64-bit version and a 32-bit version.
- To determine which version of Windows Internet Explorer you are using click the Tools icon in the upper right of Internet Explorer.
- This will display the drop down menu and click "About Internet Explorer" at the bottom of the list.
- The About Internet Explorer window will open. If you are using the 64-bit edition it will say 64-bit edition after the version number.

- You will need to switch to the 32-bit edition of Internet Explorer.
- Click "Start," go to "All Programs" and select the menu item labeled "Internet Explorer" without 64-bit after it.
- The content should now display if you already have Adobe Flash Player installed.
